The recommended list of standard stars for HAWK-I is maintained on the
instrument web pages
here.
Standard stars observed witin the context of the HAWK-I calibration
plan are slected from this table. Visiting Astronomers and Service
Mode astronomers may also select stars from these
lists. All stars in these lists are guaranteed to be included in the
HAWK-I STDSTAR_CAT FITS table catalog static calibration meaning that,
provided the OB is constructed in the HAWK-I standard star standard
way (i.e. four observations of the standard star with the standard
star placed at the center of each of the fourchips in turn), it will
be properly reduced by the online pipeline at Paranal and by the
offline processing by QC, Garching. For standard stars observed in the
standard way but not in the standard version of the STDSTAR_CAT
catalog, to use the hawki_img_zpoint recipe of the HAWK-I
pipeline users must create their own catalog including the
relevant stars (details given below).
The HAWK-I STDSTAR_CAT FITS table catalog static calibration consists
of a Multi-Extension FITS (MEF) file. Each extension is derived from
an input ascii text file in simple format specifying Name, RA, Dec,
Spec.Type, J, H, K and Y magnitudes for
each star on one line. Comments can be added to the ascii
file using the '#' char in the first column of the line. The FITS file
catalog is then created by the hawki_util_stdstars recipe of
the HAWK-I pipeline with the command:
esorex hawki_util_stdstars <sof>
where <sof> is a 'Set Of Files' (SOF) file listing the text
filesto be used. For example, the SOF for the catalog currently used
by Paranal and QC, Garching is:
Note that the search algorithm used by the hawki_img_zpoint
recipe of the HAWK-I Pipeline to find an observed standard star in the
catalog will search each table in the catalog in turn in the order in
which they are listed in the original SOF. In the case of finding
multiple entries for the same standard star it will then use the
LAST matching entry resulting from searching all tables in the
catalog. In cases where it does find any matching star, the
hawki_img_zpoint recipe stops and produces NO output files.
The FITS catalog currently used by both Paranal and QC, Garching is
HI_GSSC_081103A_stdstars_cat.fits and is based on the
following ascii tables, listed in reverse order and thus in the order
in which stars are selected from them:
HAWKI_UKIRT_pipeline_2008-11-03.txt: is taken from the UKIRT
catalog as published on the UKIRT website as "IZJHKL'M' Magnitudes for
Standard Stars on the UFTI IZ and MKO JHKL'M' systems" on
2008-07-29. It has been transformed to the Mauna Kea Near-Infrared
(MKO) Photometric system according to Leggett et al,
JHK observations of faint standard stars in the Mauna Kea
Observatories near-infrared photometric system
2006MNRAS.373..781L:
UKIRT-Fundamental.txt: Used during
commissioning and P81. It contains most of the same stars as in
HAWKI_UKIRT_pipeline_2008-11-03.txt, but also some additional stars
which are no longer appear in the official UKIRT catalog.
Hawki.txt: this table contains only a very small number of
very bright stars which will probably NEVER be observed by HAWK-I.
