LIST OF PIPELINE PRODUCTS CODES

The names of all pipeline products follow a certain naming convention. This is done to have human-readable rather than technical file names. The naming scheme has been chosen to have the type of product, its date of creation, and its pipeline-relevant parameter values all recognizable from the product name.

Since the begin of period 75 (April 2005), both science and calibration product files are renamed. (Actually, there was a transition phase extending for some instruments from April towards the end of the year 2005).

Before that date only calibration products followed the common scheme which is described here. (Some instruments had their own naming scheme which is described below, if applicable).

The general format of user-oriented product file names is the same for all VLT/VLTI instruments.

Instrument code

All pipeline product names start with two letters which are specific for the instrument. For instance: UVES product names start with 'UV', VISIR names with 'VR'.

Type of product

Next, the product type is coded. The full value is coded in the fits header key HIERARCH.ESO.PRO.CATG. A short form of this tag is coded in four characters being unique per instrument:
1st letter M or P calibration product
  S science product
G general calibration product (as of P82)
2nd to 4th letter ... type of product

instrument code

With the beginning of 2006 all ISAAC calibration product and science product names have changed as part of a major upgrade. The product names start with IS_.

All products based on observations and calibrations taken before 2006 follow the old naming scheme.

product type

The type of product is coded with four letters:

1st letter S for science
1st letter M for master calibration
1st letter P for calibration products
2nd - 4 th letter .[A-Z][A-Z][A-Z] for product specific naming

Static calibration product letter code

With P82 (October 2008), the static calibration products are also named according to the standard ISAAC naming scheme. Before that date their names did not follow a strict naming scheme. The following table lists the codes in the new name scheme:

Code PRO.CATG Type of file
IS_GARL CALPRO_XE_CATALOG Xe lines catalog
IS_GOHL CALPRO_OH_CATALOG OH lines catalog
IS_GXEL CALPRO_AR_CATALOG Ar lines catalog
IS_GSTS STDSTARS_CATS standard stars catalog
IS_GSED SEDS
IS_GRCF REF_CHECKFLAT

date

The date of origin is identical to the date of the raw data measurement. It is coded as, e.g., YYMMDD (e.g. 000915 for Oct 15, 2000). The version of a file is indicated by capital letters always starting with A.

instrumental parameters

For calibration products the following setup parameters are included:

  • darks: arm, readmode, DIT : (e.g. IS_MDRK_060101A_SW_NonDest_120.fits)
  • photometric zeropoints, twilight flats and illumination products: arm, filter (e.g. IS_PIZP_060101A_SW_H.fiits)
  • linearity products: arm, readmode (e.g. IS_PLIA_060201A_LW_DoubleCorrLowBias.fits)
  • spectroscopic flats, flux standard stars and telluric standards: arm, grating, filter, wavelength, slit (e.g. IS_MSFL_060301A_SW_LR_2.200_SK_sl2.fits)
  • startrace frames: arm, grating (e.g. IS_PSTS_060101A_SW_LR.fits)
  • spectroscopic arc frames: arm, grating, filter, wavelength, slit, lamp (e.g. IS_PACF_060301A_SW_MR_2.323_SK_sl2_Xe+Ar.fits)

Science products have the following naming scheme:

  • science imaging products: OB number, timestamp of acquisition, arm, filter
    (e.g. IS_SICO_234567_2006-03-01T03:22:17_LW_J+Block.fits)
  • science spectroscopy products: OB number, timestamp, arm, grating, filter, wavelength, slit
    (e.g. IS_SCOM_12765_2006-03-17T05:17:33_SW_MR_SZ_1.295_sl03t.fits)

where

  • wavelength is the central wavelength in microns (e.g. 2.102),
  • filter is either a broad band or a narrow band filter (e.g. Ks, NB_2.13),
  • slit is coded as sl1, sl2, or sl03t, where t is the abbreviation for tilted
  • lamp is coded as Xe or Ar or Xe+Ar, dependent on which calibration lamp is used.
  • grating is either LR or MR
  • arm is either SW or LW
  • DIT is coded without trailing zeros (e.g 10.000000 becomes 10, 3.5534600 becomes 3.55346)
  • readmode is the full string of the detetcor DET.NCORRS.NAME key, e.g. DoubleCorrHighBias.
