ESO Outreach Community Newsletter
November 2014

Dear Fellow Communicators,

The end of the year is rapidly approaching and we are getting ready for it! The ESO Calendar 2015 is now available in the ESOshop, but usually it runs out fast as it is one of our most popular products. If you are looking for other gift ideas, we have just completed a major update of our mounted images stock. All our mounted images are now again available for sale: from nebulae and galaxies to lasers shooting into the sky and beautiful landscapes from Chile.

On the same topic, if your centre or institution has a souvenir shop, we encourage you to put our Community Coordinator, Oana Sandu, in touch with your sales or marketing person to explore possible collaborations. We offer many outreach products that your visitors might find attractive. Check our ESOshop catalogue for an overview of the products and the non-profit prices (at large volumes, your price is our production price).

We hope you have noticed our new webpage design. We wanted to freshen up our web pages and make them more user-friendly, especially on mobile platforms. If you have feedback for us on how to make them even better, don’t hesitate to write to us.

If you are in Santiago de Chile between 28 November 2014 and 18 January 2015, stop by at the Museo de Arte Contemporaneo, where eight international artists present works that reflect the condition of contemporary society in an exhibition called  Bajo Presión Under Pressure. One of them is Ulrike Kuchner. The images of her collection Measuring Mistakes are part of her astronomical work and were taken with the VIsible Multi-Object Spectrograph (VIMOS), an integral field spectrograph mounted on ESO’s Very Large Telescope (VLT).

On the ESA/Hubble side, we have just passed a big milestone — one million Facebook friends! For this occasion we asked people working for Hubble to take selfies for our fans. Afterwards we invited our friends to take selfies so that we could get to know them better as well. See the end result here.

For ESA/Hubble we have also opened a Flickr group called Your Hubble Pictures, following the successful model at ESO. Anyone is invited to submit drawings, art works, photos, videos and popular art connected with Hubble.

Finally, don’t forget to register for the International Astronomical Union Directory for World Astronomy to make your organisation known worldwide, to connect with other amateur astronomers and to promote your outreach events. By signing up to the directory your organisation will also qualify to suggest names for exoplanets in the #NameExoWorlds contest. Read more here. And if you are planning events for the International Year of Light Cosmic Light cornerstone we have uploaded new logos in different languages.

Let’s reach new heights in astronomy together,

Lars Lindberg Christensen (lars@eso.org)
Head, ESO education and Public Outreach Department (ePOD)
