The NOT Legacy: A 3D slice of the z=2 universe

This large Lyman alpha imaging/spectroscopy project started in October 2001 and is foreseen to run for several years. First spectroscopic follow up run is scheduled on the Keck in July 2002. The NOT data will be made available to the Nordic community via this page.

Within the USD my primary area of responsibility is the service mode support of the following instruments:
FORS2, - UV/optical imager/spectrograph on the ESO VLT 16m telescope.

FORS2, - UV/optical imager/spectrograph on the ESO VLT 16m telescope. FORS2 is mostly identical to FORS1, but it has better QE in the red, in MOS mode one may use slitmasks on FORS2, but it has no polarimetric capabilities.

VIMOS, - UV/optical imager/spectrograph on the ESO VLT 16m telescope. VIMOS is currently under commissioning on Paranal. Science operation with VIMOS will start on April 1st, 2003.

Service Mode observations at ESO are conducted as execution of observation blocks (OBs) which have been prepared by our users. Preparation of the OBs is accomplished with the use of the P2PP tool . For certain types of observations with the two FORS instruments, it is necessary to prepare detailed target acquisitions with the FIMS tool.

After FORS Service Mode data have been taken, they undergo quality control and pipeline reductions at the ESO HQ in Garching.
