Po desetiletí se vědci domnívali, že obvyklým produktem slévání galaxií jsou eliptické galaxie. Nyní se však vědcům využívajícím teleskop ALMA a řadu dalších radioteleskopů podařilo objevit přímé důkazy, že při kolizi galaxií mohou poměrně často vznikat rovněž diskové galaxie. Tento překvapivý výsledek by mohl pomoci vysvětlit, proč je ve vesmíru tak velké množství spirálních galaxií podobných té naší.
