APEX:lla ja muilla teleskoopeilla tehdyt uudet havainnot paljastavat, että eurooppalaisten tähtitieteilijöiden vuonna 1670 havaitsema taivaalle ilmestynyt tähti ei ollut nova, vaan paljon harvinaisempi ja erityisen raju tähtien törmäys. Se oli riittävän näyttävä näkyäkseen paljaalla silmällä sen ensimmäisen kirkastumisen aikana, mutta sen jälkeensä jättämät jäämät olivat niin himmeitä, että tarvittiin hyvin huolellinen analyysi alimillimetritieleskooppeja käyttäen ennen kuin arvoitus saatettiin vihdoin selvittää yli 340 vuotta myöhemmin. Tulokset ilmestyvät tiedejulkaisusarjan Nature verkkosivuilla 23. maaliskuuta 2015.
