Dear Fellow Communicators,

Happy New Year! After the — undoubtedly well-deserved — holidays, we hope that you started 2014 at full speed! To help you plan your year better, we are offering you a 50% discount for the ESO Calendar 2014! Place an order in the ESOshop using the discount code OUTREACH-NEWSLETTER.

As for us, we kicked off 2014 richer than we left 2013: more than 50 000 friends have so far joined us on Facebook and more than 1000 photos about ESO have been shared with us so far on our Flickr group. Two milestones that can only make us happy!

During the holidays, ESO and Sterrenlab were delighted to host the first ESO Astronomy Camp at the Astronomical Observatory of the Aosta Valley, located in Saint-Barthelemy, Nus, Italy. Fifty-seven high-school students from 19 countries enjoyed lectures, practical exercises, experiments, night-time observing, nice meals, playing in the snow, and loud card games. Lots and lots of laughter was heard in the hallways. The topic was the electromagnetic spectrum, so no one present will ever forget the Planck blackbody curve ;). Or each other for that matter. Friendships were forged, and seeds for future dreams were planted. I am sure we will see and hear more from these 57 amazingly talented individuals in the future. A camp like this is a strong and much welcome reminder of why we are toiling in astronomy communication hamster-wheels around the world: to inspire future generations and connect mankind to cosmos! A big thank you to Cristina Olivotto from Sterrenlab for a great camp!

Finally, I’d like to invite you to meet our newest Photo Ambassador! Originally from the south east of England, Roger Wesson first visited Chile while backpacking around South America in 2005 and fell in love with the continent. Since September 2011 he has lived in Santiago, and spends 80 nights a year supporting operations at Paranal.

Let’s reach new heights in astronomy together,

Lars Lindberg Christensen (lars@eso.org)
Head, ESO education and Public Outreach Department (ePOD)
