January 2015

Dear Fellow Communicators,

Happy International Year of Light! On behalf of ESO and ePOD, we wish you a radiant 2015, with successful projects, both personally and professionally!

This year the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope is celebrating 25 years in orbit and we have prepared a series of ESA activities to mark the event. We will soon release details of the Ode to Hubble competition, for which we encourage you to invite your audiences, young and adult, to create a video inspired by Hubble! If you are working for a science centre in Europe, keep an eye on the web page as well, as we will soon open a call for astronomy communicators to receive a huge Hubble anniversary image in print, for free.

Don’t forget that until 15 January you and your audiences can suggest names for five impact craters on the planet Mercury. We also hope you have joined the IAU Directory for World Astronomy  (deadline 15 May 2015). If you did, you will soon be able to nominate up to 20 ExoWorlds (exoplanetary systems and their host stars) to be made available for the next stage of the contest, where names can be proposed for the most popular ExoWorlds.

Another IAU outreach initiative is the IAU Communicating Astronomy with the Public Conference, which will take place in Colombia, in 2016.

Finally, we are happy to announce we still have some copies of the ESO Calendar 2015 left! If you haven’t got your copy yet or you wish to make a gift to someone, we have a 20% discount exclusively for you. The discount is valid for just three days starting the day you receive this newsletter. To benefit from it, go to the ESOshop and purchase the ESO Calendar 2015. When completing the payment details, please insert this code SUBSCRIBE15 in the appropriate field.

Let’s reach new heights in astronomy together,

Lars Lindberg Christensen (lars@eso.org)
Head, ESO education and Public Outreach Department (ePOD)
