A number of standard settings exists for GIRAFFE. A setting is a unique combination of:

  • fibre system (Medusa1/2; IFU1/2; Argus),
  • central wavelength (in nm),
  • grating order and
  • grating name (HR or LR).

The keys INS.SLIT.NAME and INS.EXP.MODE contain the complete setting information. The latter key is available only since April 2004.

Alternatively, INS.SLIT.NAME plus INS.GRAT.NAME plus INS.GRAT.WLEN plus INS.GRAT.ORDER are also unique.

Science data taken in these settings automatically receive a set of daytime calibrations. Quality Control and trending services are provided for these settings. Find a more extensive version of the below table on the Paranal web pages (HR and LR settings).

Almost all settings now have a good pipeline extraction and wavelength calibration. The ones marked as 'y' have master calibrations in the Paranal database and can be expected to reduce well. This list is valid for data taken and processed as of April 2005, with pipeline version 0.6.2 or higher. Older pipeline versions had a smaller set of supported settings.

Note. With P73 (April 2004) a number of new settings has been introduced. Names of some settings had to be changed accordingly. To be sure about the setting identification for older data, always check the combination of filter, order, wavelength and grating which is unique. The data accessable on the archive web page have all been updated to the present convention.

Presently 31+8 standard settings are defined per slit unit (fibre system). With the slit units Medusa1, Medusa2, IFU1, IFU2 and Argus, a total of 195 settings are defined.
