Vencedora da Olimpíada Brasileira de Astronomia e Astronáutica visita o Paranal

No último dia 8 de agosto de 2015, o Paranal recebeu uma visita especial: a da estudante brasileira Carolina Lima Guimarães, campeã nacional da Olimpíada Brasileira de Astronomia e Astronáutica (OBA). A OBA é organizada por membros da Sociedade Astronômica Brasileira e em 2015 reuniu 835 mil estudantes de ensino fundamental e médio em todo o país.
Carolina, que cursa o quarto ano do ensino médio integrado com técnico em eletrotécnica no Instituto Federal do Espírito Santo (IFES), recebeu a viagem como prêmio por ter sido a melhor colocada no processo seletivo que escolheu os 5 participantes que representaram o Brasil na IX Olimpíada Internacional de Astronomia e Astrofísica (IOAA), que aconteceu de 26 de Julho a 4 de Agosto de 2015 em Magelang, Indonésia. Carolina recebeu uma menção honrosa na competição.
Segundo Carolina, "Receber a visita ao ESO como prêmio pelo meu desempenho na etapa de seleção das olimpíadas de astronomia está sendo uma grande honra. Conhecer um dos principais polos de coleta de dados para pesquisa em astronomia, que é uma área que eu gosto muito, será uma oportunidade inspiradora e inesquecível! Eu nunca havia imaginado que, ainda como aluna de ensino médio, teria a chance de fazer essa visita."
Carolina foi acompanhada na visita ao Paranal pela professora do IFES Aline Costalonga Gama, e pelo coordenador nacional da OBA, Dr. João Batista Garcia Canalle. No Paranal, foi recebida pelo astrônomo brasileiro e Diretor Científico do ESO no Chile, Claudio Melo.
Na visita, Carolina teve a oportunidade de conhecer as linhas de atraso do Interferômetro do VLT, onde recebeu explicações do engenheiro Pierre Bourget sobre o funcionamento do instrumento. Carolina e seus colegas também se encontraram com a equipe portuguesa que trabalha na instalação do ESPRESSO, o futuro instrumento de busca por exoplanetas do VLT que será dez vezes mais sensível que seu predecessor, o HARPS.
