QC1 database (advanced users): browse | plot

Dark exposures are measured during daytime for DIT = 60 secs. Darks with other DIT values are only measured by special request from a SM or VM user. There are typically five frames for each DIT value.

DARK frame. Example frame for detector #1.

DARK level
DARK level | Read-out noise | DARK bad pixels

The master dark is the median stack of the (typically) five input raw dark frames.

Trending

The QC1 parameters for darks are trended for a DIT value of 60 secs. The full plot includes also data points from darks with DIT=600s. The latter have been measured only until May 2016.

Scoring&thresholds DARK level

Thresholds have been set empirically to +5 / -5 ADUs for DIT=60s. Values above the upper limit typically indicate the presence of remnants from previous exposures.

History

Until May 2016, darks have been measured with DITs that match the DITs used for science observations during the night. After that, only darks with DIT=60s are taken regularly. Their only purpose in the data reduction chain is to provide an initial guess of the bad pixel map.

Algorithm DARK level

The median level of each input raw frame is determined; the QC parameter is the average of the all values.

Algorithm DARK bad pixels

Bad pixels are those pixels in the master dark that have values outside defined thresholds. The default thresholds are +/- 50 ADU.
