UVES Calibration cascade

The UVES calibration scheme requires careful respecting of interdependencies of raw and product calibration files. The calibration products have to be processed step by step. Hence this scheme is called a calibration cascade.

The bias and format check frames can be processed in an 'elementary' way, without other calibration products involved. The order definition flat requires the DRS setup table which is a product of the previous format check recipe. The wavelength calibration recipe requires three previously obtained products: the guess line table from the format check frame, and the DRS setup table and order table from the order definition frame. Finally, the processing of the echelle flats is done with the master bias, the background and order table from the order definition flat, and the DRS setup table from the wavelength calibration frame.

In quick-look mode on Paranal, the UVES pipeline has a fixed set of calibration products which are static. Hence these dependencies are not properly respected. The calibration solutions processed by QC Garching do respect the cascade. Together with quality checking, this results in the optimum possible products.

The flux standard stars are not part of this scheme since their processing is identical to that of science frames as far as the requirements for existing calibration products are concerned. They are therefore treated in the science reduction scheme.

Calibration products are described here. They are re-named using a naming scheme. The ones with a solid line are required for science reduction.

Intermediate products are used downstream in the calibration cascade, but not for science reduction.

Raw frames and calibration products from previous calibration steps are combined in a Reduction Block which builds a calibration job within the pipeline.
