SINFONI PIPELINE: GENERAL

The reduction of SINFONI data at QC Garching is done in a semiautomatic manner: raw data are selected and inserted into a reduction mechanism which produces

This mechanism is the SINFONI reduction pipeline.

The SINFONI pipeline consists of a number of recipes. They are based on the ESO common pipeline library (CPL).

There are two different applications of the SINFONI reduction pipeline:

  • at the YEPUN telescope (UT4) on Paranal, running in automatic mode,
  • at HQ Garching run by the Quality Control Team in the optimized mode.

The automatic operational mode is used for quick look purposes and for on-site quality control. It processes all raw data sequentially, i.e. as they arrive from the instrument. It produces calibration products and reduced science data, but will usually not obtain the best possible results. This is due to the sequential operation: post observation daytime calibrations are not available during nighttime.

The optimized operational mode becomes possible when all data of a night including the associated daytime calibrations have been collected. Then the calibration data are sorted and assessed independently of their timestamp. The best possible master calibration data are created. Their quality is checked. They are finally applied to the science data of a night. This is the way all calibration data in supported modes are reduced by QC Garching, as are all science data from Service Mode programs.

SUPPORTED MODES AND SETTINGS

The SINFONI pipeline presently supports all offered modes, except DITHER mode.

QC Garching processes the following SINFONI data

  • all pipeline supported calibration data taken with SINFONI no matter whether Service or Visitor Mode. Calibrations taken for technical reasons (DPR.CATG = TECHNICAL or TEST) are not processed.
  • all science data taken in SINFONI supported modes taken in Service Mode. Science data obtained with the GenericOffset template is only processible under certain jitter offset constraints.
 [top]FUNCTIONALITY'S

The main functionalities of the SINFONI pipeline are:

  • create master calibration data,
  • reduce science frames,
  • provide QC1 parameters.

QC Garching creates

  • calibration products from raw calibration data, both for Visitor Mode and Service Mode nights. These raw data are stored in the ESO Archive and are public. They are assessed and selected in terms of their quality and used for QC1 checks and trending;
  • reduced science data for Service Mode nights. For SM programs, QC Garching runs the pipeline on all science raw data taken in no-DITHER mode, using the best available, quality-checked master calibration data. SPIDER mode is not supported. Science stacks without embedded DPR.TYPE = SKY frames as generated by the AutoJitter or GenericOffset template are reduced on a best effort basis.

Programs performed in Service Mode receive a set of DVDs which contains

  • all raw science data,
  • reduced science data,
  • suitable calibration data (both raw and master),
  • listings and logs,
  • QC1 reports.
  • pipeline intermediate step products (e.g. individual science cube without being co-added)

The following list shows the dates from which on a new esorex/cpl version is used to reduce the data.

  • 2004-10-01, esorex 0.4.8
  • 2005-01-01, esorex 0.5.2
  • 2005-02-16, esorex 0.5.9 (for data of 2004-11-24 on)
  • 2005-05-01, esorex 1.0.3 (for data of 2005-03-13 on)
  • 2005-05-13, esorex 1.0.4 (for data of ~ 2005-03-30 on)
  • 2005-05-24 , esorex 1.0.5 (for science data of ~2005-04-05 on)
  • 2005-06-17, V 1.0.6 (for science of 2004-04-28 on, for calibrations of 2005-05-23 on)
  • 2005-07-11, V 1.0.7 (for science of 2005-06-14 on, for calibrations of 2005-06-19 on). The first frame of the stack is no longer necessarily in the center of the COADD product. Several new QC parameters introduced (linearity). Standard star and PSF products modified.
  • 2005-07-20, V 1.0.8 (for science from 2005-06-15 on, for calibrations of 2005-06-24 on). The size of science COADD products is minimized. The SKY_MED product is corrected for optical distortion and flatfield. The median collapsed cube products have WCS included.
  • 2006-02-20, V1.2.8
  • 2006-02-26, V1.3.0
  • 2006-04-01, V1.3.1
  • 2006-06-06 V1.3.7 distortion and slit pos improved
  • 2006-07-01 V1.3.8 staring mode reduction improved
