Idag, den 5 oktober 2012, firar Europeiska sydobservatoriet (ESO) att det gått 50 år sedan det bildades. Under de senaste fem decennierna har ESO blivit världens mest produktiva astronomiska observatorium. På morgonen den 5 oktober observerade ESO:s teleskop VLT för första gången någonsin ett objekt på stjärnhimlen som valts ut av allmänheten. Vinnaren av jubileumstävlingen riktade VLT mot den spektakulära nebulosan Tors hjälm, och observationerna direktsändes över Internet. För att fira jubileet anordnar ESO och dess samarbetspartners en mängd andra aktiviteter i ESO:s 15 medlemsländer.
