Pierwsze segmenty zwierciadła głównego ELT dotarły do Chile

Po pokonaniu 10 000 km podróży przez świat, pierwsze segmenty zwierciadła Ekstremalnie Wielkiego Teleskopu (ELT), budowanego przez ESO, dotarły bezpiecznie do swojego nowego domu: ELT Technical Facility w należącym do ESO Obserwatorium Paranal na chilijskiej pustyni Atakama. 18 segmentów (z 798) zwierciadła głównego (M1) zostało udanie przetransportowanych z Europy do Ameryki Południowej, docierając najpierw do terminala międzynarodowego w porcie Antofagasta w ubiegłym tygodniu.

Gdy zostanie ukończone, zwierciadło M1 teleskopu ELT będzie mieć ponad 39 metrów średnicy, co uczyni je największym okiem świata na niebo. Tak wielka skala oznacza, że zwierciadło nie może być wykonane w jednym kawałku. Zamiast tego 798 heksagonalnych segmentów będzie pracować razem, tworząc M1. Zostaną też wyprodukowane dodatkowe 133 segmenty, aby ułatwić późniejsze powtórne nanoszenie na nie specjalnych warstw.

Niesamowita podróż zaczęła się blisko Poitiers we Francji, gdzie segmenty zostały ukończone. Następnie podróżowały drogą do portu Le Havre. 17 grudnia 2023 roku te kluczowe komponenty ELT wyruszyły przez ocean. Dotarły do portu Antofagasta i kontynuowały swoją podróż po suchym lądzie, docierając do Obserwatorium Paranal w dniu 12 stycznia 2024 roku. Tam inżynierowie ESO dokonali dokładnej inspekcji, aby potwierdzić, że segmenty nie odniosły żadnych uszkodzeń w trakcie transportu.

Mając segmenty w Paranal, następnym etapem tego skomplikowanego procesu będzie pokrycie ich specjalną warstwą w ELT Technical Facility, aby jak najlepiej odbijały światło. Proces ten należy powtarzać dla każdego segment co 18 miesięcy, gdy ELT zacznie obserwacje.

Monumentalny teleskop, gdy rozpocznie działanie pod koniec tej dekady, będzie gotowy stawić czoła najważniejszym astronomicznym wyzwaniom naszych czasów, dając nadzieję na  przełomowe odkrycia, które kiedyś były niewyobrażalne.
