Integration and characterisation of the FORS-upgrade cryo-vacuum system

The FORS-upgrade project consists of a full upgrade of the FORS instrument, which has been in operation at the VLT for the last 24 years, with the aim of enabling enhanced science capabilities by implementing state-of-the-art technologies and extending its operating life for at least another 15 years. Among the upgraded subsystems, the detector system is the most critical one. The upgraded instrument will get a brand new cryogenically cooled 4kx4k CCD detector and a new cryo-vacuum system for the detector environment, to be developed according to latest VLT/ELT standards. The main tasks of the studentship subject are the mechanical integration of the cryo-vacuum system, its tuning and full characterization in order to bring the system to final working state according to the requirements. It also includes basic design activities, working in cleanroom environment and close collaboration with the control engineering team.
