Feel the Universe at Your Fingertips

Top Astronomy Apps for the iPad

28 March 2011

Access a universe of knowledge about the Universe with three new free iPad apps from ESO’s education and Public Outreach Department (ePOD), available just in time for the iPad 2.

The free ESO Top 100 Images app brings users a selection of the best astronomical images taken by a suite of the world’s most advanced ground-based astronomical telescopes from the Atacama Desert in Chile.

Astonishing views of distant galaxies and nebulae, amazing night-sky landscapes, first-class telescopes with lasers shooting into the sky transform the iPad into an exciting window to the Universe. Each image is explained in a caption with additional information just a tap away. In the slideshow mode the Top 100 can be contemplated with background music from Zero Project, while each high resolution image makes full use of the bright iPad screen when used as wallpaper.

Feel the Universe at your fingertips by downloading the ESO Top 100 Images app from the iTunes store.

Those who wish to test how much cosmic knowledge the new, lighter and slimmer iPad can access at any point in spacetime, are encouraged to download the new Portal to the Universe app, the one–stop–shop for all things astronomy. Designed in a magazine style, this free App brings the latest scientific breakthroughs gathered from hundreds of news and blog sources every day. It’s never been easier to be well informed about the latest space news. The Portal to the Universe is a project sponsored by the European Southern Observatory (ESO), the International Astronomical Union and the European Space Agency (ESA).

Together with the European Space Agency (ESA) ePOD has also launched the ESA/Hubble Top 100 Images app which features the best NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope images. The free app can be downloaded from the iTunes store.

Notes

The ESO Top 100 Astronomical Images, Portal to the Universe, and ESA/Hubble Top 100 Images Apps are open source apps designed and developed by ESO with Víctor R. Ruiz (linotipo.es). The project coordinator is Lars Holm Nielsen (ESO). The app includes creative commons music from the Greek group Zero Project.
