Twilight at Cerro Armazones

The sun has set over the Atacama Desert and the horizon turns different tones of orange and red. Venus is visible on the right as a bright dot in the clear blue sky. This amazing panoramic view was taken from Cerro Armazones, a 3046 metres high mountain in the II Region of Chile and about 20 km away from Cerro Paranal, home of the ESO Very Large Telescope (VLT). Cerro Armazones is the selected site for the planned Extremely Large Telescope (ELT), which, with its 40-metre-class diameter mirror, will be the world’s biggest eye on the sky.

This panorama was taken by ESO Photo Ambassador Serge Brunier.
