Mirror and internal structure of UT3 "MELIPAL"
The image shows part of the internal structure of the UT3 telescope, "MELIPAL". The camera is focusing both the floor of this giant complex (follow the blue straight lines) and the 8.2-diameter mirror of the telescope, which reflects the upper part of the telescope and the ceiling of the complex. MELIPAL, which means Southern Cross in the Mapuche language, is part of the four telescopes of the VLT, the Very Large Telescope of ESO, situated in the astronomical observatory of Paranal.
