Starry nights, extraordinary days

Sky phenomena are not reserved for the night alone. Here a relatively rare instance of a circumhorizontal arc, caused by particular refraction of light, casts vivid colours in the clouds over the site of ESO's Very Large Telescope (VLT), the world's most advanced visible-light astronomical observatory.
