Mountains and lonely ALMA

The Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) is situated more than 5000 metres above sea level in the Chilean desert, on the Chajnantor plateau. Here, the dry air and thin atmosphere allow a spectacular view into the Universe and make it the perfect place for such a sensitive telescope. Just one of the telescope's 66 antennas is pictured here, dwarfed by the stunning landscape for miles around.
