December 2013

Dear Fellow Communicators,

December is here and it will soon be the holiday season! We want to wish you a joyful holiday and a Happy New Year! This Christmas card is for you!

We were lucky enough to receive our Christmas gift early this year! The Klaus Tschira Stiftung made a donation to ESO to fund the construction of a new planetarium and visitor centre at ESO Headquarters in Garching bei München, Germany. The new centre will be called ESO Supernova — Planetarium & Visitor Centre and is designed to inspire people to look up at the stars, and teach them about the importance of astronomy. Although it will not open for another three years we are very excited about the opportunities that this new centre will bring and we look forward to sharing our experience with you.

Should you have any ideas on how we could make this centre better, please don't hesitate to write to us.

A few take-away tips for you:

  • A recently published article on "Why astronomy is important?" might be useful in your everyday projects as we are often asked this question. It will also be published in the next issue of CAPjournal.
  • We're really enjoying this 3D HD Earth and Moon wallpaper! It is interactive and quite realistic!
  • If you have a chance, enjoy this new planetarium show by ESO Photo Ambassador Serge Brunier and Point du Jour, Le Navigateur du Ciel.

Let's reach new heights in astronomy together,

Lars Lindberg Christensen (lars@eso.org)
Head, ESO education and Public Outreach Department (ePOD)
