Test bench for vacuum systems of ELT instruments

The instruments of the ELT which are currently under construction are about a factor of 10 larger in size, volume and mass than ESO’s instrumentation up to now. The larger dimensions required an adaptation of the vacuum system design and the implementation of new components, larger pumping units and higher safety levels by increased component redundancy.

The task is to set up a test bench with all vacuum components following the revised ELT instrumentation vacuum system design and test the typical operational scenarios as foreseen for ELT instruments (main evacuation, re-evacuation, re-pressurization, valve open/close sequences, vacuum pressure monitoring, thresholds, maintenance precautions, safety implementations etc.)
