Analysis of Current Reliability and Operation Limits

1999 uptime statistics accounting for target acquisition, weather and technical shutdowns.

Reliability: the list of technical failures and downtime statistics during the verification period (ascii file) .
The frequency of the seeing updates decreases with increasing wind speed as more and more exposures are invalidated due to wind shake of tower and telescope. The wind operating limit is currently set at 18m/s (1mn average) and 21m/s (maximum)

  • La Silla DIMM Efficiency: monthly ratio DIMM data availability to clear nighttime sky on a hourly basis for the period since automatisation in 1995
  • DIMM has been closed in November 1998 for an upgrade to VLT standards. Service of the ASM resumed in April 1999.
