A red desert panorama

This red, martian-like wasteland, is indeed very terrestrial. It shows the dry Atacama desert, high up in the chilean Andes. This is the home to ESO's observatories. The hostile, dry environment of the desert, offers the best observing conditions for astronomers worldwide, even if it puts the humans and the used technology to the limits.
