APEX image calendar, January 2010 — last sun rays of the day hitting the antenna
The sun shines onto the 12-metre diameter APEX mirror in this bottom-up view. The enormous mirror is used to study some of the farthest, and thus earliest parts of the Universe. APEX is the largest submillimetre-wavelength telescope operating in the southern hemisphere.
