The VLT in action

The ESO Very Large Telescope (VLT) during observations. This picture was taken from the VLT platform looking southwest. In front, two of the four 8.2-metre Unit Telescopes (UT4 and UT3, from left to right) are visible. The VLT is composed of four 8.2-metre UTs and four 1.8-metre Auxiliary Telescopes (ATs), two of which are visible in the background. Just above UT4, from left to right, are the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds, two irregular neighbouring galaxies of the Milky Way. The bright star on the upper left is Canopus, in the constellation of Carina ("the Keel").
