A power plant for the VLT

20 March 1997

These photos show one of the three generating sets (08a/97 and 08b/97) that will constitute the electric power station of the ESO Paranal Observatory of the Very Large Telescope Observatory (VLT).

They were made on March 18, 1997, when it was undergoing technical acceptance tests on the premises of the manufacturer SDMO located in Brest, France.

Each set is integrated into a 40 foot container and will be able to generate 800 kW of electric power at the altitude of the Observatory.

Power will be distributed to the four 8.2-metre Unit Telescopes as well as to the other structures of the VLT Observatory by means of a medium voltage (10 kV) power distribution system.
