Weaving the Cosmic Web: Large-Scale Structure and Galaxy Formation at High Redshift

May 24 - 27, 2027

ESO Santiago, Chile

Workshop Rationale and Topics

Over the past years, our view of the high-redshift Universe has been transformed. JWST is identifying galaxies within the first few million years after the Big Bang, ALMA is resolving the cold gas and dust content of systems up to the end of reionization, and wide-field surveys are beginning to map the cosmic web on scales and at redshifts that were inaccessible only a decade ago. Furthermore, MUSE and X-shooter have reshaped our understanding of Lyman-alpha emitters, circumgalactic gas, protocluster environments, and chemical enrichment of young galaxies.

At the same time, cosmological simulations have reached the resolution and physical sophistication needed to make detailed, testable predictions for these regimes, opening a unique window onto the coupled evolution of large-scale structure and the baryonic Universe.

With this workshop, we aim to

  • Bring together observers and theorists to discuss new measurements of large-scale structure and galaxy populations across the high-redshift universe, from the end of reionization to cosmic noon.
  • Assess how JWST, ALMA, MUSE, Roman, Euclid, and other wide-field surveys' results are shaping and will continue to shape our understanding of galaxy formation in the first few billion years after the Big Bang
  • Explore the connection between the cosmic web and physical processes that drive galaxy assembly, gas accretion, and quenching at high redshift
  • Foster collaborations between the large-scale structure and galaxy evolution communities on both observations and simulations
  • Anticipate the science for future projects such as MOONS, BlueMUSE, MAVIS, CUBES, ELT instruments, and the synergies they will unlock with current space and ground-based facilities

Key topics of the conference:

  • Wide-field surveys of galaxies that trace the cosmic web at high-z, including new facilities
  • Gas accretion: from filaments to CGM to ISM gas properties
  • Star formation, chemical enrichment, and quenching as a function of environment
  • Simulations of the high-redshift small- and large-scale cosmic web

And more to be confirmed.
