Feasibility study of a meteorological predition model for ESO observatories in Chile

The ECMWF database (purchased by ESO, according to specifications by
Pr. R. Benzi) concerns a 15x15 degrees area around La Silla and Paranal.
It consists of analysis (every 6
hours) and forecasts (every 12 hours) from 1989 to 1993 of the main
meteorological parameters at standard altitude levels.
The horizontal resolution was improved from 1.125 degrees (ca. 100~km, depending on
latitude) to 0.5625 degrees starting in November 1991. The use of a limited area model
(LAM- object of this study) would reduce the grid size to 1/6th of a degree.
What follows is an example of an analysis, extracted at CRS4 and displayed
with VIS5D and GRADS public domain software.
