Pas ontdekte exoplaneet is mogelijk de beste kandidaat voor de detectie van tekenen van leven
19 april 2017: Een exoplaneet die om een rode dwergster op veertig lichtjaar van de aarde draait, zou wel eens de nieuwe houder kunnen zijn van de titel 'beste plek om naar tekenen van leven buiten het zonnestelsel te zoeken'. Met behulp van het HARPS-instrument van de ESO-sterrenwacht op La Silla, en telescopen elders ter wereld, heeft een internationaal team van astronomen een 'superaarde' ontdekt die zich binnen de leefbare zone van de zwakke ster LHS 1140 bevindt. Deze wereld is een beetje groter en aanzienlijk zwaarder dan de aarde en heeft zijn atmosfeer waarschijnlijk grotendeels kunnen vasthouden. Dit, samen met het feit dat hij tijdens elk omloop voor zijn moederster langs schuift, maakt hem tot een van de spannendste objecten voor toekomstig atmosfeeronderzoek. De resultaten zullen op 20 april 2017 verschijnen in het tijdschrift Nature.
