Introduction

Modern high quality CCD detectors are produced with 2048 x 4096 pixels (pixelsize = 15 mm). Astronomers desire even larger detectors for their instruments. To achieve larger focal planes, several CCDs are combined to a mosaic, such as the 8192 x 8192 pixel mosaic used in ESO's Wide Field Imager and the 16384 x 16384 mosaic CCD in OMEGACAM. Within an astronomical instrument the light has to be in focus on all of these CCD detectors, requiring that all CCDs of the mosaic must be mounted to within 30 microns of a flat plane.
