Tests of stellar model atmospheres: The case of psi PheWe propose MIDI and AMBER observations of theM4 giant psi Phe. Limb-darkening measurementsof this star were obtained with VLTI and the commissioning instrument VINCI in order to test stellar model atmospheres (Wittkowski et al. 2003). Since these VLTI/VINCI studies, we have in our hands detailed spherically symmetric hydrostatic PHOENIX as well as plane-parallel hydrostatic ATLAS model atmospheres for this source, which cover the full VLTI wavelength range from 0.9mum to 13mum. While the VINCI K-band averaged observations showed a good agreement of observations and theory, the spectrally dispersed stellar radiation field could not be tested. The proposed AMBER and MIDI observations would enable us for the first time to confront the wavelength dependent stellar radiation field with interferometric observations at a high spectral resolution of up to 230 (MIDI) and 10,000 (AMBER). The model stellar radiation field predicts a strong wavelength-dependence, especially at molecular bands.
