You can access commonly available files using the ftp://ftp.eso.org as anonymous.
The anonymous area on the ESO ftp server is split into two hierarchies
- pub - files under pub are made available byESO to people at sites outside ESO.
- incoming - the directories under incoming can receive files provided by people outside for the attention of ESO personnel
These areas have been subdivided into subdirectories managed by adifferent groups. E.g. pub/usg contains information made available by the User Support Department, whilst incoming/usg contains information which has been uploaded for the attention of the User Support Department. Each group which maintains information for long term publication on the FTP server requires a group use account on the anonymous FTP server to allow this information to be maintained. The account can be requested to Helpdesk.
In addition to these "group" areas there is a general user area thati ndividual users can use to share files with the outside world.pub/general is the general use publication area andincoming/general the general use incoming directory. These are intended to allow the short term publication of information, andso any files placed in either of these areas will be removed if theyare more than 15 days old. Also, as this is a general use area therewill be no automated "you have new incoming files in your FTP area"e-mails generated by people depositing files. These were consideredsuperfluous as invariably the person placing files into this incomingarea e-mails the intended recipient saying "put these files into theincoming area for you".
More details how to gain access and how to use the ESO ftp server can be obtained from your ESO Contact.
