ESO/NEON Observing School at La Silla

Santiago and La Silla Observatory, February 22 - March 4, 2016

During two weeks of intense work the participants will have the chance to have hands-on real-life experience on the full cycle from proposal preparation to data reduction. Participants will be divided in 5 groups of 4. During the whole school, each group will be guided by a tutor and possibly by a tutor assistant. The school is preferentially targeted to PhD students from whole South America, but advanced MSc's and more senior PostDocs can also apply.

After a preparatory work done at the ESO Headquarters in Chile where the students will have lectures on the basics of observing techniques and how to prepare observations for ESO telescopes, the group will go up to the La Silla Observatory for a 3-night of observations in the ESO NTT, and Danish 1.54-m telescopes. Back in Santiago with the data in hand, the participants will reduce and analyse their datasets.

While having lectures on hot-topics of the present day astrophysics, the teams will prepare their presentation of their results to the ESO audience. Additional training on aspects of career development is also foreseen.

There is no registration costs. Local expenses (lodging, transportation and meals) are fully covered by the school. Participants are expected to cover their international trip to Chile. A contribution to travel expenses can be envisaged on a duly justified case by case basis.
The school is sponsored by ESO and Opticon.

The school is taking place in Santiago at ESO/Chile headquarters whereas the observational part is carried on-site at the La Silla Observatory.

Travel information will be added soon.

The registration has now been closed.

Please do not proceed with any bookings until your participation is confirmed after November 15.
