Multiwavelength Mapping | |||||

Observations from space and ground observatories are providing an unprecedented wealth of data on galaxy populations from low to the highest redshifts, extending virtually uninterrupted in wavelength coverage from X-rays to radio. For the first time it is now possible to empirically map the evolution of galaxies through cosmic time, following their assembly, growth, ageing, and morphological metamorphosis and differentiation. This is a time when direct observations appear to have a leading edge over theoretical simulations, and their input is now indispensable to orient further theoretical efforts. For this reason, ESO together with the Universitäts-Sternwarte München and the Max-Planck-Institut für Extraterrestrische Physik are jointly organizing a 4-day workshop on ``Multiwavelength Mapping of Galaxy Formation and Evolution''. The meeting is partly intended as the continuation of the workshop on "The Mass of Galaxies at Low and High Redshift", that was held in 2001 at the same venue. The workshop is primarily meant to offer a forum for reporting the latest results of multiwavelength galaxy surveys, all the way from low to high redshift, including e.g., X-ray observations with Chandra and Newton-XMM, UV data from GALEX, optical and near-IR data from 8-10m class telescopes and HST, mid-IR data from SIRTF, data from mm and sub-mm telescopes as well as radio observations. While the primary emphasis is placed on the phenomenology of galaxy evolution, the workshop is structured to allow time for the presentation of the latest theoretical attempts on the prediction and interpretation of the observations. |
The workshop will be hosted by the Venice International University, singularly located on an island in sight of Venice downtown, and will take place on October 13-16, 2003.
