Pale Red Dot-Kampagne gewinnt den Universitätspreis des Guardian

Der Erfolg der Pale Red Dot-Kampagne [1] wurde am 29. März 2017 gebührend gewürdigt, als die Queen Mary University in London – und damit die Institution, die die Kampagne leitete [2] – den diesjährigen Universitätspreis des Guardian in der Kategorie breitenwirksame Forschung gewann. Die Pale Red Dot-Kampagne war ein Projekt [3], das ins Leben gerufen wurde, um der Öffentlichkeit durch einen einzigartigen Echtzeit-Einblick zu zeigen, wie Forschung betrieben wird. Das wissenschaftliche Programm zielte darauf ab, einen erdähnlichen Planeten um Proxima Centauri zu identifizieren – dem Stern, der unserem Sonnensystem am nächsten ist. Die Auszeichnung des Guardian hebt den bedeutenden Beitrag hervor, den die Kampagne leistete, um Spitzenforschung einem breiten Publikum zu vermitteln.
Die Kampagne war im Januar 2016 gestartet worden, als die Beobachtungen von Proximal Centauri begannen – unter anderem mit dem HARPS-Spektrografen der ESO auf La Silla in Chile [4]. Die Suche dauerte an bis April 2016 und wurde von Blog-Einträgen sowie den sozialen Medien Facebook und Twitter begleitet. Zahlreiche Artikel, verfasst von Experten auf der ganzen Welt, ergänzten die Berichte. Den Beobachtungen folgend, analysierten die Wissenschaftler die Daten in der Hoffnung, dass sie finden würden, wonach sie suchten. Im August 2016 schließlich gaben sie die Entdeckung bekannt: Sie hatten einen Exoplaneten gefunden!
Innovative Vermittlungskampagnen wie diese werden weiterhin die Öffentlichkeit begeistern und fesseln, indem sie den Menschen den Reiz neuer Entdeckungen näherbringen und den wissenschaftlichen Prozess herausstellen.

[1] Der Name Pale Red Dot spielt auf Carl Sagans berühmte Bezeichnung für die Erde an: Pale Blue Dot (dt. blassblauer Punkt). Da Proxima Centauri ein roter Zwergstern ist, taucht er den ihn umkreisenden Planeten in ein blassrotes Leuchten.

Marvin (Universität Göttingen).
[3] Die Kampagne wurde vom Projekt-Team mit Unterstützung der Öffentlichkeitsarbeitsabteilungen der ESO, der Queen Mary University London, dem Institut für Astrophysik in Andalusien/CSIC, der Universität Montpellier, der Universität Göttingen, der Universität Chile und dem weltweiten Las Cumbres Observatory Teleskop-Netzwerk koordiniert.
[4] Zu den Daten aus der Pale Red Dot-Kampagne kamen Beiträge von Wissenschaftlern hinzu, die Proxima Centauri seit vielen Jahren beobachtet haben. Dazu gehörten Mitglieder des eigenständigen UVES/ESO M-Zwerg Programms (Martin Kürster und Michael Endl) und Pioniere der Exoplanet-Suche wie R. Paul Butler. Auch die über viele Jahre hinweg gewonnenen öffentlichen Beobachtungen vom HARPS-Team in Genf wurden einbezogen.
