Sternenguckerei in der Wüste
Sogar in ihrer Freizeit können viele Astronomen dem Drang nicht widerstehen, einen Blick auf den sternenbesetzten Nachthimmel zu werfen. Dieses Bild zeigt einen faszinierten Astronomen, der aus der Residencia, dem Wohnheim der Mitarbeiter des Paranal-Observatoriums der ESO in Chile, in die Sterne schaut. Der Blick zeigt, wie das staubige und sternenübersähte Band der Milchstraße über der Atacama-Wüste aufgeht, der abgelegenen Heimat des Very Large Telescope der ESO (das auf dem Gipfel des Cerro Paranal steht).
Die unwirtlichen Bedingungen in der Wüste gaben die Rahmenbedingungen für die Residencia vor, die im Jahr 2002 fertiggestellt wurde. Das Gebäude umfasst 108 Gästezimmer und wurde in einer Mulde der Wüstenlandschaft errichtet – eine wahre Oase für Astronomen. Sie ist das Refugium in den harschen Bedingungen der Atacama – sie hat sogar einen tropischen Garten und Swimmingpool! Das Gebäude wurde so entworfen, dass es sich in die Landschaft harmonisch einfügt und die Lichtverschmutzung des besonders dunklen Nachthimmels auf dem Paranal vermeidet. Die faszinierende und außergewöhnliche Lage der Residencia fiel auch dem Filmteam in 2008 auf, als sie als Schauplatz des James Bond Films Ein Quantum Trost diente.
