ESO kondigt steun aan voor AstroCamp
Win een gratis astronomische reis naar Portugal

Met trots kondigt ESO de nieuwe samenwerking aan met het Centrum voor Astrofysica van de Universiteit van Porto (CAUP) om AstroCamp 2017 te steunen, een academisch zomerprogramma gericht op astronomie voor leerlingen van het secundair onderwijs (Ned: voortgezet onderwijs). Astrocamp 2017 gaat door van 6 tot 20 augustus in het noorden van Portugal in het Centrum voor Milieu-educatie en Interpretatie van het beschermd natuurgebied Corno de Bico. Op 25 februari zullen de organisatoren een webcast organiseren om meer informatie te verstrekken aan potentiële kandidaten en hun familie.
De doelstelling van het kamp is om de nieuwsgierigheid van scholieren en hun vaardigheid tot kritisch nadenken te stimuleren, vooral dan op het gebied van astrofysica en om leerlingen met verschillende achtergronden en levenservaring samen te brengen. De leerlingen zullen twee cursussen volgen met elke dag lessen, enkele opdrachten en een eindexamen.
Enkele hoogtepunten van het programma dit jaar zijn:
- Astronomische observatiesessies, zowel met het blote oog als met telescopen, waaronder ook een sessie die samenvalt met de piek van de meteorenzwerm de Perseïden.
- Gesprekken via Skype met astronomen en natuurkundigen in verscheidene landen.
- Een computerproject waardoor leerlingen met gegevens van ’s werelds beste telescopen kunnen werken.
- Sociale activiteiten zoals wandelen, sport, gemeenschapsdienstactiviteiten, films en documentaires.
Tijdens de webcast op 25 februari zal een voormalige leerling een presentatie houden waarin ze haar ervaringen beschrijft van de editie 2016, ook wordt er informatie over de kampactiviteiten en over het sollicitatie-en selectieproces gegeven. AstroCamp staat open voor leerlingen uit elk land van de Europese Gemeenschap, die op dit ogenblik les volgen in één van de drie laatste jaren van het secundair onderwijs (d.i. in principe iedereen die geboren is in 1999, 2000 of 2001). De voertaal in het kamp is Engels. Het aantal deelnemers is beperkt, de leerlingen zullen bijgevolg geselecteerd worden op basis van hun schoolresultaten en hun potentieel. Voor details over de sollicitatieprocedure kunnen leerlingen terecht op de website van AstroCamp. De sollicitatie omvat een motivatiebrief, een aanbevelingsbrief en de recentste schoolresultaten van de kandidaat. Solliciteren voor AstroCamp 2017 kan van 1 tot 30 april 2017. Kandidaten die geselecteerd worden voor de shortlist zullen uitgenodigd worden voor een Skype-interview dat doorgaat tijdens het weekend van 27 en 28 mei.
Portugese leerlingen die geselecteerd worden om aan het kamp deel te nemen zullen geen kosten aangerekend worden. Voor leerlingen uit andere landen zal een deelnameprijs van ongeveer 400 € alle kosten in Portugal dekken (volpension, begeleiding door professionele medewerkers, alle kampactiviteiten en materiaal, transport van/naar de luchthaven van Porto en verzekering). De reiskosten van thuis naar de luchthaven van Porto en terug zijn voor rekening van de deelnemer.
De kandidaat met de beste sollicitatie uit één van de ESO-lidstaten en die in aanmerking komt om te solliciteren, zal een door ESO aangeboden beurs winnen ter waarde van de deelnameprijs van het kamp.
De selectie van de deelnemers aan het kamp zal kort na de interviews plaatsvinden. Verwacht wordt dat de winnaar van de ESO-beurs rond 5 juni zal bekend gemaakt worden. De deelnemers moeten uiterlijk tegen 14 juni bevestigen dat ze het kamp zullen bijwonen en de daartoe vereiste documenten indienen.
