Entregan la Oficina Central de ALMA en Santiago

Las Oficinas Centrales en Santiago del proyecto ALMA (Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array) fueron entregadas oficialmente en el sector de Vitacura de la capital chilena. El nuevo edificio, contiguo a las oficinas del Observatorio Europeo Austral (ESO) en Santiago, fue construido por ESO como parte de sus responsabilidades como socio europeo de ALMA. La ceremonia tuvo lugar el 5 de Noviembre de 2010.
Asistieron a la ceremonia el Director General de ESO, Tim de Zeeuw, y el Director de ALMA, Thijs de Graauw.
El nuevo edificio de dos pisos tiene un tamaño de casi 7.000 metros cuadrados. Tiene más de 100 oficinas, además de otras instalaciones como salas de reunión, auditorio y estacionamiento subterráneo para 130 vehículos. El estacionamiento subterráneo permitirá reforestar con áreas verdes algunos de los anteriores estacionamientos que existían en la superficie. Como parte de la construcción, catorce árboles que se encontraban en el lugar fueron reubicados dentro de las instalaciones de ESO, en una delicada operación realizada por una compañía especializada.
El personal de ALMA, incluyendo gerencia, administración, extensión, IT, equipo científico y astrónomos, está paulatinamente comenzando a ocupar sus nuevas oficinas. El Observatorio ALMA antes arrendaba oficinas en dos ubicaciones en Santiago, en El Golf y en Alsacia, las que ya fueron desalojadas.
ALMA, el proyecto astronómico más grande en existencia, es un telescopio astronómico revolucionario, compuesto por un conjunto de telescopios de 66 antenas gigantes de 12 y 7 metros de diámetro que observan a longitudes de onda milimétricas y submilimétricas. Este complejo se encuentra actualmente en construcción en el Llano de Chajnantor, a 5.000 metros de altura, en los Andes chilenos. ALMA es una asociación entre Europa, América del Norte y Asia del Este, en cooperación con la República de Chile. ESO es el socio europeo en ALMA.
