Andreas Kaufer asume como nuevo director general de ESO

A partir de hoy, 1 de septiembre de 2026, Andreas Kaufer inicia su mandato como director general de ESO. Kaufer asume el cargo en un contexto en el que la construcción del Extremely Large Telescope (ELT) de ESO se acerca a sus etapas finales, ALMA se somete a una importante actualización y ESO comienza la definición de su próxima iniciativa científica. En este nuevo rol sucede a Xavier Barcons, quien se desempeñó como director general de ESO desde 2017 hasta el final de su mandato, el 31 de agosto de 2026.
Kaufer señaló: “Mis prioridades para los próximos cinco años son muy claras. En primer lugar, nos centraremos en concluir con éxito y poner en marcha el ELT. Pero para mí, el ELT no es el final de un viaje, es el comienzo de un nuevo capítulo. Esto desatará una revolución en la astrofísica observacional, y ni siquiera podemos anticipar lo que vamos a descubrir. En paralelo, trabajaremos para maximizar el rendimiento científico de todas las instalaciones de ESO de una manera segura, eficiente y efectiva para garantizar que puedan seguir funcionando durante muchas décadas. Mi objetivo es preparar a ESO para el futuro más allá de la primera luz del ELT. Lo lograremos invirtiendo en nuestra gente y en tecnología y pensando en la próxima generación de oportunidades científicas”.
Kaufer, noveno director general de ESO, aporta a su nuevo cargo una vasta experiencia en investigación astronómica, instrumentación y gestión operativa. Obtuvo un doctorado en Astronomía en la Universidad de Heidelberg en 1996 y posteriormente trabajó en el Observatorio Estatal de Heidelberg, donde realizó investigaciones sobre las atmósferas de estrellas masivas y la evolución química de las galaxias, además de dedicarse al desarrollo y construcción de instrumentación astronómica. Kaufer se incorporó a ESO en 1999 como parte del grupo de operaciones científicas que contribuyó a poner en funcionamiento el recién construido Very Large Telescope. Asumió como director del Observatorio La Silla Paranal en 2006 y fue nombrado primer director de operaciones de ESO en 2008.
Ahora, como director general, Kaufer pretende seguir favoreciendo una investigación científica de excelencia gracias al personal, telescopios e instrumentos de primer nivel de ESO, permitiendo realizar las mejores observaciones astronómicas posibles.
“Lo que hace que ESO sea realmente especial para mí es su capacidad de reunir países, personas y una extraordinaria amplitud de conocimientos y experiencia. Juntos, estamos logrando cosas que ningún país podría lograr por sí solo. Es una combinación única de ambición científica, excelencia en ingeniería, experiencia operativa y visión a largo plazo”, señaló Kaufer. “Esto solo es posible gracias al apoyo permanente de nuestros 16 Estados miembros y nuestro país anfitrión, Chile. Espero con mucho entusiasmo trabajar con ellos y con toda la comunidad de ESO, para hacer frente a los emocionantes desafíos y oportunidades que tenemos por delante”.
