Presidente de Alemania visita el Observatorio Paranal de ESO en Chile

El presidente de Alemania, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, y su delegación realizaron una visita al Observatorio Paranal de ESO, en el norte de Chile, zona que alberga algunos de los telescopios terrestres más avanzados del mundo. La visita marca la primera vez que un presidente alemán visita las instalaciones de ESO en Chile.
Ayer, el presidente Steinmeier y su delegación fueron recibidos por el director general de ESO, Xavier Barcons, en la Residencia de Paranal, para luego dirigirse a una visita al Very Large Telescope (VLT) de ESO y su interferómetro (VLTI) guiados por la representante de ESO en Chile, Itziar de Gregorio-Monsalvo y el director del Observatorio La Silla-Paranal, Thomas Klein.
“Es un honor dar la bienvenida al Presidente Steinmeier al Observatorio Paranal de ESO. Alemania, Estado Miembro fundador de ESO y sede de nuestras oficinas centrales, ha hecho contribuciones muy significativas a ESO en las últimas décadas", dijo el director general de ESO, Xavier Barcons. “Estamos agradecidos por el apoyo incondicional del país y esperamos continuar nuestra fructífera colaboración con la industria alemana y los institutos de investigación y desarrollo.”
Reinhard Genzel, director del Instituto Max-Planck de Física Extraterrestre en Alemania y antiguo colaborador de ESO, también acompañó al presidente alemán. Genzel fue galardonado con el Premio Nobel de Física en 2020 por el descubrimiento del agujero negro en el centro de nuestra galaxia, con observaciones realizadas durante más de 30 años, donde varias instalaciones de ESO desempeñaron un papel clave en el hallazgo. Dominika Wylezalek, profesora de la Universidad de Heidelberg y ex alumna y becaria de ESO, también formó parte de la delegación.
Hoy, el presidente Steinmeier, Genzel y otros miembros de la delegación tuvieron la oportunidad de visitar el sitio de construcción del Extremely Large Telescope (ELT) de ESO, a unos 20 km de Paranal.
Alemania ha desempeñado un papel esencial en este y en muchos de los logros tecnológicos y científicos de ESO. Por ejemplo, la empresa alemana SCHOTT produjo los bloques de vitrocerámica para los espejos del VLT, así como para el ELT, mientras que varios institutos de investigación alemanes han liderado consorcios para el diseño y construcción de instrumentos para los telescopios de ESO. En su discurso, el presidente Steinmeier destacó el compromiso permanente del país con ESO y el papel fundamental que Chile y sus cielos prístinos juegan en sus operaciones.
"Nos enorgullece que Alemania haya sido uno de los Estados fundadores de ESO y que científicos alemanes participen en esta investigación de vanguardia", dijo en una declaración a los medios desde la plataforma de Paranal. "Para que este nivel de investigación pueda mantenerse, es fundamental que este lugar esté permanentemente protegido de emisiones de luz provenientes de otras fuentes."
El desierto de Atacama en Chile tiene los cielos más oscuros y despejados del planeta. Este lugar único, crucial para liderar la investigación astronómica, está actualmente bajo amenaza por un enorme complejo industrial que se planea construir a solo 5 a 11 kilómetros de los telescopios en Paranal. De no ser reubicado, la contaminación lumínica causada por este proyecto provocará daños irreparables a las observaciones astronómicas.
