El presidente de la República Checa y el ministro de Relaciones Exteriores de Chile visitaron el Observatorio Paranal de la ESO en Chile

Petr Pavel, presidente de la República Checa, su esposa Eva Pavlová, Francisco Pérez Mackenna, ministro de Relaciones Exteriores de Chile, y una nutrida delegación checa han concluido una visita al Observatorio Paranal de ESO, en el norte de Chile. La delegación incluyó al embajador checo en Chile, Pavel Bechny, al presidente de la Academia Checa de Ciencias, Radomír Pánek, el director del Instituto de Astronomía de la Academia Checa de Ciencias, Michal Bursa, así como a periodistas y representantes de empresas checas.
El Director General de ESO, Xavier Barcons, dio la bienvenida al presidente Pavel, al ministro Pérez Mackenna y al resto de la delegación al Observatorio de Paranal el 17 de abril. Los visitantes recorrieron las obras del Extremely Large Telescope (ELT) de ESO, antes de dirigirse al Very Large Telescope (VLT), donde observaron la apertura de uno de los telescopios. Más tarde, por la noche, observaron los láseres desde la plataforma del VLT —un elemento clave del sistema de óptica adaptativa del telescopio que compensa la turbulencia de la atmósfera terrestre— y visitaron la sala de control del VLT. Durante su estancia, los visitantes de alto nivel tuvieron la oportunidad de conocer en persona las instalaciones de Paranal y sus excepcionales cielos oscuros, así como de obtener más información sobre el ELT y cómo ampliará nuestra comprensión del Universo. La delegación también se informó sobre las oportunidades de negocio que genera el desarrollo de tecnología de vanguardia por parte de ESO.
La República Checa se unió a ESO en 2007, convirtiéndose en el primer Estado miembro de la región de Europa Central y del Este. Las instituciones checas han realizado importantes contribuciones al desarrollo de instrumentos y telescopios propiedad de ESO y de aquellos alojados en las instalaciones de ESO. Por ejemplo, empresas checas han contribuido a la instrumentación tanto de Paranal como del ELT. Más al sur, en el Observatorio de La Silla de ESO, un consorcio liderado por la Academia Checa de Ciencias también ha dado nueva vida al telescopio de 1.52 m de ESO, con el instrumento PLATO Spec.
“Nos complace enormemente dar la bienvenida al presidente Pavel y a su delegación a Paranal,” dijo Barcons. “La República Checa ha sido un Estado Miembro de ESO muy comprometido durante casi 20 años. La introducción de un programa de prácticas de ingeniería y ciencia en ESO para ciudadanos checos, que ahora sirve de modelo para otros Estados Miembros, y la participación de institutos checos en la instrumentación del ELT, son ejemplos de cómo la colaboración entre ESO y la República Checa está impulsando la astronomía e invirtiendo en la próxima generación de científicos e ingenieros.”
En cuanto a la presencia del ministro Pérez Mackenna durante la visita, Barcons afirmó: “La participación del ministro de Relaciones Exteriores de Chile en esta visita subraya la sólida y fructífera relación que ESO ha mantenido con Chile —que alberga todos nuestros telescopios actuales— durante más de seis décadas. La tecnología desarrollada por la República Checa y otros Estados miembros de ESO da frutos científicos en gran parte gracias a esta colaboración de larga data con Chile, cuyos cielos extraordinariamente oscuros y prístinos tenemos el privilegio de observar y que garantizan el máximo valor científico de las observaciones.”
