Trifid-tågen – en tredobbelt nydelse

I dag har ESO offentliggjort et nyt billede af Trifid-tågen, der viser, hvorfor den er en af favoritterne blandt astronomer, såvel amatører som professionelle. Denne store stjernefabrik har fået sit navn på grund af de mørke støvbånd, der tredeler dens glødende hjerte, og den er en sjælden kombination af tre tågetyper, der både afslører nydannede stjerners rasen og er udgangspunkt for fødslen af flere stjerner.

I en afstand på flere tusinde lysår i stjernebilledet Sagittarius (Skytten) ulmer Trifid-tågen som et betagende portræt af de tidlige stadier af en stjernes liv – fra undfangelsen til det første lys. Varmen og ”vindene” fra nyligt antændte stjerner rører rundt i Trifid-tågens gas- og støvfylde gryde; med tiden vil de mørke tråde af stof, der er spredt ud over hele området, selv falde sammen og danne nye stjerner.

Den franske astronom Charles Messier observerede for første gang Trifid-tågen i juni 1764. Han registrerede det disede, glødende objekt som nummer 20 i sit berømte katalog. Omkring 60 år senere lavede John Herschel observationer af støvbanerne, der synes at opdele den kosmiske sky i tre dele. De inspirerede den engelske astronom til navnet ”Trifid”.

Det nye billede er lavet med Wide-Field Imager vidvinkelkameraet, der er monteret på MPG/ESO 2,2-meter teleskopet på ESO’s La Silla-observatorium i det nordlige Chile. Det viser tydeligt de forskellige områder i Trifid-tågen, som de ser ud i synligt lys. I den blålige del øverst til venstre, der kaldes en refleksionståge, spreder støv og gas lyset fra nærtliggende stjerner, som er født i Trifid-tågen. Den største af disse stjerner lyser klarest i den varme blå del af det synlige spektrum. Dette forhold, sammen med det faktum, at støvkorn og molekyler spreder blåt lys mere effektivt end rødt lys – en egenskab, der forklarer, hvorfor vi har blå himmel og røde solnedgange – gør, at denne del af Trifid-tågen har en azurblå nuance.

Nedenfor, i det runde, rødlige område, der typisk for en emissionståge, er gassen i Trifid’s kerne opvarmet af hundredvis af glohede unge stjerner, så den udsender det karakteristiske røde lys fra brint, der er gassens hovedbestanddel. Det er det samme der sker, når varm neon-gas lyser rød-orange i lysskilte over hele verden.

Gas og støv, der ligger på kryds og tværs af Trifid-tågen, udgør den tredje type tåge i denne kosmiske sky. De er kendt som mørke tåger, fordi de blokerer for lyset og derfor ser mørke ud (Hestehoved-tågen er nok den mest kendte af disse [ESO pressefoto 02/02]). Inde i disse mørke baner, vil rester af tidligere episoder af stjernedannelse fortsat samles under tyngdekraftens ubarmhjertige tiltrækning. Den stigende tæthed, tryk og temperatur inde i disse gasklumper, vil i sidste ende starte kernefusion, og endnu flere stjerner vil dannes.

I den nederste del af denne emissionståge stikker en finger af gas ud fra skyen, der peger direkte på den centrale stjerne, der er Trifid-tågens kraftværk. Dette er et eksempel på en fordampende gasboble (EGG: Evaporating Gaseous Globule), der også ses i Ørnetågen, som er et andet stjernedannende område. På spidsen af fingeren, der blev fotograferet af Hubble, har en knude af tæt gas modstået angrebet af stråling fra den tunge stjerne.

ESO planlægger i øjeblikket et 42 meter optisk/nær-infrarødt teleskop kaldet European Extremely Large Telescope (E-ELT), der vil blive ”verdens største øje mod himlen”.
