VISTA fanger en himmelsk kats skjulte sider

Kattepotetågen, NGC 6334, er en enorm kosmisk fødeklinik, hvor hundredvis af tunge stjerner bliver dannet. Et storslået nyt ESO-billede viser infrarødt lys, der trænger gennem den glødende gas og de blokerende støvskyer og afslører nogle af kattens skjulte unge stjerner. Billedet er taget med Visible and Infrared Survey Telescope for Astronomy (VISTA) på Paranal-observatoriet i Chile.

Mod hjertet af Mælkevejen, 5500 lysår fra Jorden i stjernebilledet Scorpius (Skorpionen), strækker Kattepotetågen sig over et område på 50 lysår. Set i synligt lys er tågens gas og støv oplyst af varme unge stjerner og det skaber de mærkelige rødlige former, som har givet objektet sit navn. Et billede taget for nyligt af ESO’s Wide Field Imager (WFI) på La Silla-observatoriet (eso1003) viser tågen i synligt lys i stor detalje. NGC 6334 er en af de mest aktive fødeklinikker for tunge stjerner i vores galakse.

VISTA, der er det nyeste teleskop på ESO’s Paranal-observatorium i den chilenske Atacama-ørken, er verdens største kortlægningsteleskop (eso0949). Det arbejder ved infrarøde bølgelængder og kan se lige igennem en stor del af det støv, der er et meget smukt, men forstyrrende element i tågen, og derfor afsløre objekter, der er skjult for teleskoper, som arbejder i synligt lys. Synligt lys bliver let spredt og absorberet af interstellart støv, men støvet er næsten gennemsigtigt for infrarødt lys.

VISTA har et hovedspejl, der er 4,1 meter i diameter, og det er udstyret med det største infrarøde kamera, som er i brug på et teleskop. Det deler de spektakulære observationsforhold med ESO’s Very Large Telescope (VLT), der er placeret på den nærtliggende bjergtop. Med dette kraftige instrument til deres disposition, var astronomerne ivrige efter at se på fødslen af store unge stjerner i Kattepotetågen, hvoraf nogle er næsten ti gange tungere end Solen. Billedet i infrarødt lys er meget anderledes end i synligt lys. Fordi støvet ikke generer så meget, kan forskerne lære meget mere om hvordan disse stjerner dannes og udvikler sig i de første få millioner år af deres liv. VISTA’s store synsfelt gør det muligt at fange hele det stjernedannende område i en enkelt optagelse af højere kvalitet end nogensinde før.

VISTA-billedet er fyldt med utallige stjerner fra Mælkevejen dækket med spektakulære tråde af mørkt støv, der her ses fuldt ud for første gang. Nogle steder er støvet så tykt, at det endda blokerer for den nærinfrarøde stråling, som VISTA’s kamera kan se. I mange af de støvede dele af tågen ses orange områder – fx tæt på midten af billedet. Disse områder er tegn på ellers skjulte aktive unge stjerner med deres jetstråler. Længere ude blotlægger VISTA’s syn lidt ældre stjerner og afslører de processer, der fører stjernerne ad en ujævn vej gennem de første få millioner år af deres liv efter at kernefusionen er gået i gang i deres indre.

VISTA-teleskopet skal nu i gang med flere store kortlægninger af den sydlige himmel, som vil tage år at færdiggøre. Teleskopets store spejl, billeder af høj kvalitet, det følsomme kamera og store synsfelt gør det til det kraftigste infrarøde kortlægningsteleskop i verden. Som dette slående billede viser, vil VISTA holde astronomer travlt beskæftiget med at analysere data, som de ikke kan indsamle på anden måde. Denne kat er ude af sækken.

ESO planlægger i øjeblikket et 42 meter optisk/nærinfrarødt teleskop kaldet European Extremely Large Telescope (E-ELT), der vil blive ”verdens største øje mod himlen”.
