VLT tager det mest detaljerede infrarøde billede af Carina-tågen

ESO’s Very Large Telescope har leveret det hidtil mest detaljerede infrarøde billede af stjernefabrikken Carina-tågen. Mange hidtil skjulte detaljer, spredt over et spektakulært himmelsk landskab af gas, støv og unge stjerner, er dukket frem. Det er et af de mest dramatiske billeder, VLT nogensinde har taget.

Dybt inde i hjertet af den sydlige del af Mælkevejen ligger en stjernefabrik kaldet Carina-tågen. Den befinder sig ca. 7500 lysår fra Jorden i stjernebilledet Carina (Kølen) [1]. Denne sky af glødende gas og støv er en af de nærmeste kuvøser for meget tunge stjerner og den rummer flere af de klareste og tungeste stjerner, vi kender. En af dem, den mystiske og meget ustabile stjerne Eta Carinae, var i 1840’erne gennem flere år den næstklareste stjerne på himlen, og den vil sandsynligvis eksplodere i en supernova eksplosion i den nærmeste fremtid - på astronomisk tidsskala. Carina-tågen er et perfekt laboratorium for astronomer, der studerer stjerners voldsomme fødsel og tidlige liv.

Selv om at denne tåge er spektakulær på billeder i normalt synligt lys (eso0905), er mange af dens hemmeligheder skjult bag tykke skyer af støv. For at trænge igennem dette slør har et europæisk hold af astronomer ledet af Thomas Preibisch (University Observatory, München, Tyskland), brugt ESO’s Very Large Telescope sammen med et infrarød-følsomt kamera kaldet HAWK-I [2].

Hundredvis af enkeltoptagelser er blevet kombineret for at skabe dette billede, som er den hidtil mest detaljerede infrarøde mosaik af tågen og et af de mest dramatiske billeder, der nogensinde er taget af VLT. Det viser ikke bare de strålende tunge stjerner, men hundredtusinder af meget svagere stjerner [3], der hidtil har været usynlige.

Den blændende stjerne Eta Carinae ses nederst til venstre i det nye billede. Den er omgivet af gasskyer, der gløder under det voldsomme angreb fra energirig ultraviolet stråling. Hen over billedet ses også mange kompakte klatter af mørkt materiale, der er uigennemsigtige selv set i infrarødt lys. Det er de støvede pupper, hvor nye stjerner bliver dannet.

I løbet af de seneste få millioner år er der i dette område på himlen blevet dannet et stort antal af stjerner både hver for sig og i hobe. Den klare stjernehob tæt på centrum af billedet kaldes Trumpler 14. Selvom dette objekt ses tydeligt i synligt lys, kan langt flere lyssvage stjerner ses i dette infrarøde billede. Og i venstre side af billedet ses en lille koncentration af stjerner, der ser gule ud. Denne gruppering blev for første gang set i disse nye data fra VLT: disse stjerner kan slet ikke ses i synligt lys. Det er blot ét af mange nye objekter, der for første gang er blevet afsløret, i dette spektakulære panoramabillede.

[2] Støvede områder i rummet absorberer og spreder blåt lys med kort bølgelængde mere end det røde lys med længere bølgelængde. Denne effekt forklarer også hvorfor solnedgange her på Jorden ofte er røde, især når der er støv i atmosfæren. I nogle støvede områder på himlen, især i stjernedannende områder som Carina-tågen, er denne effekt så stærk, at intet synligt lys kommer igennem. Astronomer løser dette problem ved at observere i infrarødt lys ved hjælp af specielle kameraer, såsom HAWK-I på ESO’s VLT eller med det infrarøde kortlægningsteleskop, VISTA.

[3] Et af hovedmålene for astronomerne var at søge efter stjerner i området, der er meget svagere og lettere end Solen. Billedet er også dybt nok til, at kunne afsløre unge brune dværge (mislykkede stjerner).

I år 2012 er der 50-års jubilæum for grundlæggelsen af det Europæiske Syd Observatorium (ESO). ESO er den mest fremtrædende internationale astronomi-organisation i Europa og verdens mest produktive astronomiske observatorium. I Chile driver ESO tre unikke observatorier i verdensklasse: La Silla, Paranal og Chajnantor. På Paranal driver ESO Very Large Telescope (VLT), der er verdens mest avancerede astronomiske observatorium til observationer i synligt lys samt to kortlægningsteleskoper. VISTA arbejder i infrarødt lys og er verdens største kortlægningsteleskop, mens VLT Survey Telescope (VST) er det største teleskop, der udelukkende er bygget til at kortlægge himlen i synligt lys. ESO er den europæiske partner i et revolutionerede astronomisk teleskop kaldet ALMA, det største igangværende astronomiske projekt. ESO planlægger i øjeblikket et 40 meter optisk/nær-infrarødt teleskop kaldet European Extremely Large Telescope (E-ELT), der vil blive ”verdens største øje mod himlen”.
