Vuonna 2025 julkaistiin 1100 ESO-dataan perustuvaa tutkimusta

Viime vuonna julkaistiin noin 1150 tutkimusta, joissa käytettiin ESO:n observatorioissa kerättyä dataa. Tämä oli jo toinen peräkkäinen vuosi, jolloin julkaisuja oli yli 1100. 2025 oli myös yhdeksäs peräkkäinen vuosi, jolloin ESO:n eri toimipisteissä tehdyt havainnot johtivat yli 1000:een vuosittaiseen julkaisuun. ESO:n kirjasto-, dokumentointi- ja tietopalveluosasto on päivittänyt julkaisustatistiikan vuoden 2025 osalta, ja tehnyt tarkan erittelyn kunkin ESO:n yksikön osuudesta [1].
Kuten aiempina vuosina, ESO:n Very Large Telescope, eli VLT-teleskoopin ja VLT-interferometrin (VLTI) havainnot hallitsevat julkaisuja. Ne ovat olleet mukana noin 670:ssä tutkimuksessa vuonna 2025. Teleskoopeilla on laaja valikoima eri instrumentteja, sekä ne sijaitsevat Paranalin observatoriolla Chilen Atacaman autiomassa, jossa on ainutlaatuiset havainto-olosuhteet ja tähtikirkas pimeä taivas. Nämä tekevät teleskoopeista ja paikasta huippupaikan tähtitieteen tutkimukselle. Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer, eli MUSE jatkaa kuudetta vuotta peräkkäin VLT/I:n tuottavimpana instrumenttina, jonka dataa on käytetty yli 200:ssa artikkelissa. Viime vuonna MUSE-instrumentin kohokohta oli Sculptor-galaksin äärimmäisen tarkka tuhannen värin kuva. Toinen viime vuoden kohokohta oli VLT:n Ultraviolet and Visual Echelle Spectrograph, eli UVES-instrumentin avulla löydetty planeetta, jonka kiertorata on kohtisuorassa tähtiparin suhteen. Instrumentti oli viime vuonna toiseksi tuottavin VLT:n instrumenteista yli 120:lla artikkelilla.
Myös Paranalin observatoriossa sijaitsevat ESO:n Visible and Infrared Survey Telescope for Astronomy, eli VISTA ja VLT Survey Telescope, eli VST [2], tuottivat dataa yli 100:n julkaisuun. ESO:n ensimmäisen observatorion, La Sillan dataa oli mukana noin 200:ssa tutkimuksessa viime vuonna, mikä on enemmän kuin vuonna 2024 177:llä tutkimuksella. Tämä osoittaa, että observatorio on edelleen merkittävä tutkimuspaikka erityisesti ESO:n 3.6-metrin teleskoopin HARPS-instrumentin (High Accuracy Radial velocity Planet Searcher) ansiosta.
ESO:n omistama Atacama Large Millimeter/Submillimeter Array, eli ALMA oli vuonna 2025 mukana yli 550:ssä julkaisussa. Noin puolet näistä julkaisuista perustui eurooppalaisille tähtitieteilijöille myönnettyyn havaintoaikaan. Viime vuonna julkaistujen ALMA:n avulla tehtyjen tutkimusten huippukohtia olivat hapen löytyminen kaukaisimmasta tunnetusta galaksista ja uuden planeettakunnan syntyvaiheiden havainnot. ALMA:n vieressä sijaitsevan Atacama Pathfinder Experiment (APEX) -teleskoopin havainnot, jota ESO hallinnoi ja ylläpiti vuoden 2025 loppuun asti, johtivat viime vuonna noin 45:een artikkeliin. Näistä lähes 20:ssä käytettiin ESO:n havaintoaikaa.
ESO Science Archive Facilityn dataa hyödynnettiin ennätysmäärässä julkaisuja. Noin 530 artikkelia perustui osittain tai kokonaan arkistotietoihin. Siten vuosi 2025 oli myös ennätysvuosi, ja ESO:n julkaisuista suurin osa (46 %) käytti arkistodataa, mikä korostaa vanhojen havaintojen arvoa huipputason tähtitieteen tutkimuksessa. Lisäksi yli neljännes kaikista vuoden 2025 julkaisuista perustui yksinomaan arkistodataan, ilman tutkijoiden omia ESO-havaintoja.
Vaikuttava julkaisumäärä on osoituksena ESO:n suuresta merkityksestä tähtitieteilijöille heidän edistäessään ymmärrystämme maailmankaikkeudesta. Tämä on mahdollista ainoastaan laajan tähtitiedeyhteisön ja ESO:n henkilöstön ansiosta, ESO yksiköiden huipputeknologian sekä ESO:n jäsenmaiden ja Chilen jatkuvan tuen ansiosta.

[1] Artikkeleissa on voitu käyttää dataa useammasta kuin yhdestä yksiköstä, ja siksi kokonaislukumäärää ei voi laskea pelkästään laskemalla kaikkien yksittäisten yksiköiden julkaisut yhteen.
[2] VST-projekti oli yhteishanke ESO:n ja Capodimonten tähtitieteen observatorion kanssa, joka kuuluu Italian kansalliseen astrofysiikan instituuttiin (INAF). 1. lokakuuta 2022 alkaen, projekti on ollut yksinomaan INAF:in hanke, jota ESO isännöi Paranalilla. Vain ne artikkelit, jotka perustuvat kokonaan tai osittain ESO:n VST-havaintoaikaan ovat tilastoissa mukana.
