Tähtitieteilijät ovat löytäneet vahvimmat todisteet Betelgeusen kumppanin olemassaololle

“Vuosisata kestäneen arvoituksen ratkaisu”

Tähtitieteilijöillä on vihdoin vankkaa näyttöä sille, että Betelgeuse – yksi yötaivaan tunnetuimmista tähdistä ei ole yksin. Ranskalaisen tutkijan Miguel Montargèsin johtama tutkimusryhmä otti Euroopan eteläisen observatorion Very Large Telescope -teleskoopilla (ESOn VLT) kaikkien aikojen tarkimman kuvan, jossa todennäköisesti on Betelgeuse B, eli Betelgeusen kiertolainen. ”Tämä on vuosisata kestäneen etsinnän huipentuma”, Montargès sanoo.

”Olemme osoittaneet, että Betelgeuse ei ole yksin, vaan sillä on himmeä tähtikumppani”, sanoo Montargès, joka on tähtitieteilijä Ranskan Observatoire de Paris PSL:ssä ja tänään Astronomy & Astrophysics -lehdessä julkaistun tutkimuksen pääkirjoittaja. Betelgeuse on Orionin tähdistössä sijaitseva punertava tähti, joka näkyy hyvin paljain silmin. Sen kirkkauden tiedetään vaihtelevan, ja sitä on havaittu jo tuhansia vuosia. Silti se tarjoaa tähtitieteilijöille yllätyksiä.

”Hyppäsin tuoliltani, kun näin käsitellyt kuvat”, Montargès muistelee. Tähtitieteilijät ovat etsineet mahdollista kumppania jo noin vuosisadan ajan, mutta tuloksetta. Alun perin kumppania ehdotettiin selittämään Betelgeusen kirkkauden vaihteluita. Vuonna 2024 julkaistiin kaksi tutkimusta, jotka ennustivat luotettavasti, että kyseisen vuoden joulukuussa kumppani olisi kauimpana Betelgeusesta ja siten helpoiten havaittavissa. Montargès ja hänen tiiminsä ryhtyivät töihin ja tekivät tähdestä havaintoja ESO:n VLT-teleskoopilla joulukuussa 2024, jonka jälkeen käyttivät useita kuukausia tietojen käsittelyyn.

”Totta puhuakseni luulin, ettei kykymme riittäisi Betelgeuse B:n havaitsemiseen ennustetulla tavalla”, Montargès kertoo. ”Koska se on kuitenkin ennustettua massiivisempi, saimme sen havaittua!” Alun perin Betelgeuse B:n massan arvioitiin olevan suunnilleen Auringon suuruinen, mutta uudet havainnot paljastavat, että sen massa onkin noin kaksi–kolme kertaa Auringon massan suuruinen. ”Se, että pystymme yhä löytämään läheisen, Aurinkoa massiivisemman ja kirkkaamman seuralaisen tällaisen paljon tutkitun tähden ympäriltä, on merkittävää”, Montargès sanoo. ”Nämä ovat parhaita hetkiä tieteessä, kun näemme jotain uutta ja odottamatonta.”

Betelgeuse B:stä saatiin otettua kuva suoraan, eli Chilen Atacaman aavikolla sijaitsevalla ESO:n VLT-teleskoopin SPHERE-instrumentilla saatiin havaittua tähdestä itsestään tulevaa omaa valoa. Vaikka kumppanitähden olemassaolosta oli jo aiemmin viitteitä, ja siitä saatiin mahdollinen suora havainto jo Havaijilla, Yhdysvalloissa sijaitsevalla Gemini North -teleskoopilla, tämä on vahvin todiste ja selkein Betelgeuse B:n kuva tähän mennessä. ”On hienoa nähdä, miten SPHERE ja edistyneet datankäsittelytekniikat, jotka alun perin kehitettiin eksoplaneettojen löytämiseksi, soveltuvat erinomaisesti myös Betelgeusen kaltaisen massiivisen, kehittyneen tähden seuralaisen havaitsemiseen”, sanoo yksi artikkelin kirjoittajista Anthony Boccaletti, joka on myös tähtitieteilijä Observatoire de Paris:issa

”Jotta voimme olla varmoja siitä, että seuralainen on todellinen, meidän on vielä tarkkailtava sitä vuoden kuluttua tähden toisella puolella, mutta epäilyille on enää hyvin vähän varaa”, Montargès lisää.

Muutama vuosi sitten Betelgeuse herätti sekä tähtitieteilijöiden että muiden kiinnostuksen, kun se alkoi selvästi himmentyä. Kehittyneenä ylijättiläistähdenä Betelgeusen odotetaan kuolevan supernovaräjähdyksessä, ja himmeneminen sai jotkut spekuloimaan, että se saattaisi olla räjähtämäisillään. Montargèsin johtama tähtitieteilijöiden ryhmä tutki tähteä ESO:n VLT:llä ja totesi, että se oli sen sijaan pölypilven peitossa.

Betelgeuse B:n mahdollinen havainto kannustaa tähtitieteilijöitä tutkimaan, miten kumppani voisi vaikuttaa Betelgeusen ennustettuun supernovaräjähdykseen. ”Kysymys siitä, vaikuttaako kumppani punaisen ylijättiläisen kehitykseen, on nyt ajankohtainen”, Montargès toteaa lopuksi.

Rakennamme parhaillaan Paranalin lähelle Cerro Armazonesille "maailman suurinta taivaalle katsovaa silmää”, ESO:n Erittäin suurta kaukoputkea (Extremely Large Telescope, ELT). Santiagossa, Chilessä sijaitsevista toimipisteistämme tuemme toimintaamme Chilessä, ja olemme yhteydessä chileläisiin yhteistyökumppaneihin ja yhteiskuntaan.
