Les ministres des Sciences en visite au siège de l'ESO

Le 29 septembre 2026, des ministres et secrétaires d’État de différents pays se sont rendus au siège de l’ESO à Garching bei München, en Allemagne. La délégation, conduite par la ministre fédérale allemande de la Recherche, de la Technologie et de l’Espace, Dorothee Bär, a été reçue par le directeur général de l’ESO, Andreas Kaufer.
Parmi les visiteurs figuraient Eva-Maria Holzleitner, ministre fédérale autrichienne des Femmes, des Sciences et de la Recherche ; Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings, ministre ghanéenne de l’Environnement, des Sciences et de la Technologie ; Zoltán Tanács, ministre hongrois des Sciences et de la Technologie ; et Shaukat Abdulrazak, secrétaire principal kenyan chargé des Sciences, de la Recherche et de l’Innovation. Cette visite a été l’occasion de présenter l’ESO comme un modèle de collaboration scientifique internationale, ainsi que de développement et d’investissement à long terme dans des infrastructures de recherche de niveau mondial.
Le groupe a été accueilli par Andreas Kaufer, en présence des directeurs de l’ESO et de membres du personnel issus de l’ensemble de l’organisation. Au cours de leur visite, ils ont découvert les installations de l’ESO au Chili et ont appris comment l’ESO rassemble des pays, des personnes et des institutions afin d’approfondir notre connaissance de l’Univers et de renforcer notre capacité à l’explorer. La présentation a été suivie d’un échange sur les avantages et les défis de la recherche fondamentale avec Reinhard Genzel, directeur de l’Institut Max Planck de physique extraterrestre en Allemagne, dont les découvertes, récompensées par le prix Nobel, ont été rendues possibles grâce aux installations de l’ESO.
La délégation a également visité le bâtiment technique de l’ESO, où les instruments et les composants destinés aux projets de l’ESO sont assemblés et testés avant d’être expédiés au Chili. Une grande partie du travail qui y est actuellement mené est consacrée à l'Extremely Large Telescope (ELT) de l'ESO, en cours de construction dans le désert d'Atacama, au Chili. Le groupe s'est ensuite rendu au Planétarium et au Centre des visiteurs de l'ESO Supernova, où les ministres ont assisté à un spectacle au planétarium et visité l'exposition. Ils ont également participé à une liaison en direct avec l'observatoire de Paranal de l'ESO, au Chili, et ont pu découvrir l'ELT dans un environnement virtuel.
