Swirling stars

Stars swirl overhead an Auxiliary Telescope at ESO's Paranal Observatory in this stunning shot from the Atacama Desert in northern Chile.

In the southern hemisphere, as the Earth turns, the stars appear to move in circles around the southern celestial pole. With a long enough camera exposure — such as the one used here — the stars appear to create circular trails as they move.
